In the golden month of October, we are focusing on two particularly fascinating gemstones: opal and tourmaline.

The opal is a particularly popular stone because of its multi-faceted colour play. Vibrant bursts of colour vary depending on your angle. This is unique to opals. The Roman scholar Pliny the Elder described the opal as follows: “For in the opal you shall see the burning fire of the carbuncle, the glorious purple of the amethyst, the green sea of the emerald, the golden yellow of the topaz, the deep blue of the sapphire all glittering together, mixed after an incredible manner.”

In ancient times this gemstone was considered to be particularly valuable. It was said that after the gods created all gemstones they gave the opal parts of each. Hence its bright play of colours. You could justify considering the opal a “best of” compilation of all gemstones. Looking at the opal has a calming effect on the soul. It is said to reconnect the wearer with his/her inner self and to increase self-belief. It is also said to help you find true love – and as it is generally considered that you can only find true love when you are at peace with yourself this even seems to make sense.
